The objection by the, as I understand it, is against the unnecessary testing of times tables at year 4 and the consequent reporting of results obtained to judge pupils and schools. As a teacher of engineering in high school, the headteachers are dead wrong. Rote memorization of numbers is akin to learning a second language for cognitive development, and relying on a calculator to do your math neglects the understanding of how the math works. Yes, you friggin need it. It’s brain training to memorize more complex things. Plus without this, I would have been terrible in math. I mean this as a literal thing, I remember it was a night and day difference in my math skills after my 2nd-grade time’s tables sessions. I used those constantly all the way through college in my thought processes in any kind of math. The fact is if you learn properly it you can do it faster than even pulling out a calculator.
