“There have been millions of years of evolution for this process,” said Charles Swanton from the Francis Crick Academy in England. “The system is quite good but not perfect.” The risk comes from a small number of defective cells that have not been repaired. Over time, one of those cells grows and divides into thousands, then tens of thousands of cancer cells. Eventually there may be billions of cancer cells in one tumor. This causes a really challenging problem. Once the faulty cell initially divides and grows into a tumor, the person will have cancer until all the cancer cells are removed from the body. If only a few cancer cells survive, they will continue to divide and grow into tumors again.
