Walker’s experiences and the Hobbiesshirt-Seniors 2020 the one where they were Quarantined shirt she’s able to channel into her work are shared with flourish. Hairstylist and The Handmaid’s Tale alum Ting Fang Liu created stunning, period-accurate coifs for Spencer and her co-stars Tiffany Haddish and Carmen Ejogo. “When we looked at photographs of black beauty of the period and what people did with their hair, especially after Madam C.J., a lot of the hairstyles look modern and relatable,” says Lemmons. “You can see the progression and how we got to our full fabulousness today.” More than looking good, the styles of the time were an expression of pride. “It was a way of looking at life and saying yes, we’re concerned for our survival, but we can also be well-groomed and feel beautiful,” she says. “There were the politics of respectability, which helped people to get jobs and uplift themselves, but it doesn’t end at presentation.
