I first read Harry Potter when I was 11 years old, when the books were translated in spanish and arrived to Mexico. I grew reading and waiting for each one of the Harry Potter Leviosa Hermione Granger shirt, I even studied harder in my english class to read the last two in the original language. This story helped me through my rough teenage years. I always thought of myself as a Ravenclaw and when Pottermore beta was released I was one of the first to be in it. The sorting hat put me on Ravenclaw and was such a magical experience. Now in my twenties, this books still being so important in my life, I hope to read them to my kids and to have this something in common with them. Harry Potter will always be a huge part of my life. Thank you Jo Rowling. I was introduced to Harry Potter by one of my younger cousins. His dad (my uncle) took the two of us to see the 1st movie and I fell in love. I sat down that night and read the book and had to catch up on the series (books of course!). Is there a favorite part? No, I introduced the Harry Potter world to my mom who eagerly anticipated the books with me as we discussed each new adventure to this day. I had to take over a class that was so naughty in November, the teacher left at lunch and sent her dad to come back and get her personal items. No substitute could handle them, as over 50% scored under the 10th percentile in reading. I tried everything, but how to make a 5th grader interested in short vowels?? Finally, I closed the door and passed out Spanish copies of Harry Potter as I played the English audio. LUMOS!!!! I only bought six Spanish copies and a class set of English, and many kids were feverishly looking back and forth between copies, some standing for a half hour reading over the shoulder for clarification with the English book in one hand. Every Spanish book was checked out every night, and it was the first time in my teaching career when I realized what I had to do to get kids to really read- forget the patronizing structured rules, rules, rules, and start with passion and content. Every year I have had to stand up for reading Harry Potter to administrators and parents, and at times have done so at decent risk when I was new at schools. To me, it was worth it, and my kids’ scores proved that to be the case. I have purchased several dozen of each Harry Potter book since then to inspire students often reading at second grade levels, but pushing themselves so they could be allowed to read Harry Potter by getting their scores up. It served as great motivation. I have read the books aloud with each of my three children (as one would be on the last book, the next child was ready to start the first.) We listen to the audio books on long car rides, and I listen to the English version then turn on the Spanish version so I can learn Spanish, then go back to the English version (I must have read and reread the first chapter of Sorcerer’s Stone at least thirty times (Capitulo Uno- El nino que vivio!) My own children were often reluctant readers until they came to love the magic of Harry Potter and we celebrated several birthdays with Harry Potter parties, complete with wand making and a crushed cake from Hagrid. Our pets are named after Harry Potter characters too- Hermione the horse, Hagrid our guard dog, Luna our aloof puppy, and Norbert the cat all bring Harry Potter into our lives daily.
